December 2007: Do you live at or near the beach?

The results of our poll of the month regarding how much time you spend at or near the beach should come as no surprise to ASBPA newsletter readers and website visitors. A total of 75% of our responders live at or very near a beach either full or part time and 21% choose to vacation at beaches. Our quality of life is tied to the quality of our beaches.

February 2008: Are you personally concerned about climate change?

The majority of our Web site visitors (74%) are concerned about climate change, with 23% not convinced that climate change is really occuring, and 3% are not concerned.

March 2008: Should the federal government provide disaster assistance to barrier island communities impacted by multiple coastal storms?

Definitely. 35.2 %; In some cases. 16.9 %; Only the first time. 7.0 %; No way, they shouldn't be living there. 39.4 %

April/May 2008: What is the most important factor in a successful beach nourishment project?

Sand quality 25.7 %; Increased wildlife habitat (turtles, shorebirds, etc) 8.6 %; Increased storm protection 30.0 %; Longevity of the project 34.3 %

June/July 2008

Our poll question this month was, “What is the most important consideration in selecting a coastal erosion management strategy ?” Approximately a quarter of respondents indicated that sediment transport patterns were most important, while permit and environmental concerns were vital for about seventeen percent. Less than eight percent considered aesthetics and cost key considerations. Nearly half of all respondents said they couldn’t choose just one as most important, because all were crucial!
