EVENT: ASBPA 2016 National Coastal Conference
ORGANIZATION: American Shore & Beach Preservation Association (ASBPA)
DATES: Wednesday-Friday, Oct. 26-28, 2016
VENUE: Ocean Place Resort, 1 Ocean Blvd., Long Branch, NJ

SUMMARY: ASBPA is the nation’s first organization to promote science-based policies for the preservation of coastal areas. The 2016 conference, whose theme is “Lighting the Way for the Coastal Future,” will provide an opportunity for all coastal stakeholders to learn together and develop collaborative networks and resources to promote best management practices to maintain and improve the health of our coasts. A significant number of conference sessions (more than 180 total sessions are planned) will look at New Jersey coastal issues as well as national coastal concerns. This event also celebrates the 90th anniversary of ASBPA, which was formed in New Jersey in 1926.

HIGHLIGHTS:
Wednesday afternoon:

  • Keynote address by U.S. Rep. Frank Pallone, New Jersey
  • Presentations by David Rosenblatt, Assistant Commissioner, New Jersey Department of Environmental Protection; Lynn Bocamazo, Chief, Hurricane Sandy Relief Branch, U.S. Army Corps of Engineers; Curtis Cravens, Climate Policy and Programs, New York City Office of the Mayor
  • Presentations on Creating Resilient Coastal Landscape along Urban Coasts and  A Sense of Place: The Jersey Shore

Thursday: Six concurrent breakout sessions 7:30 a.m.-5 p.m. (~110 total), full program online at www.asbpa.org

Friday morning: Six concurrent breakout sessions 7:30-11 a.m. (~55 total), full program online at www.asbpa.org.

  • Improving Resiliency in Coastal Communities
  • Implementation of the North Atlantic Coast Comprehensive Study and Improving Coastal Resiliency
  • Lessons from Superstorm Sandy
  • Getting to Resilience in New Jersey: The Lessons and Determination for On-the-Ground Living Shorelines and Biological Response to Coastal Projects Resilient Efforts
  • Regional Sediment Management
  • Building Ecological Solutions to New Jersey Coastal Community Hazards
  • Protecting our Beaches and Dunes Using Planning, Hard & Soft Engineering Practices
  • Enhancing Resiliency in New Jersey: Coordinating Ecological and Community Planning
  • A Wednesday evening poster session with more than 25 presenters

Speaker availability may vary depending on individual schedules. Media representatives must check in at conference registration desk to show credentials before entering sessions. To arrange recording/taping and in-session photography, please contact conference coordinator beforehand to facilitate any technical issues.
