ASBPA Testifies on WRDA

July 10, 2019Press Releasesasbpa_ed

On July 10th, ASBPA Executive Director, Derek Brockbank, testified before the House Transportation & Infrastructure committee in the hearing “Water Resources Development Acts: Status of Implementation and Addressing Future Needs.”

ASBPA called on the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers to manage the coastline to support four interconnected values:

  1. Protection from coastal storms, hazards and sea level rise, and as buffer to sensitive estuarine ecosystems;
  2. Ecologically valuable habitat for birds, turtles, fish and other coastal plants and wildlife;
  3. Economic vitality though tourism, shipping, fishing and other industries;
  4. Recreation for tens (if not hundreds) of millions of Americans who visit the beach in greater numbers than all our national parks combined.

To do this, ASBPA asked Congress to advance:

  • Regional Sediment Management (RSM) and the Beneficial Use of Dredged Material (BUDM);
  • A modification of the Corps’ Benefit-Cost-Ratio (BCR) process;
  • Natural Infrastructure.
