Academic Survey – 2025

April 30, 2024MiscAnnie Mercer

The American Shore & Beach Preservation Association (ASBPA) Science & Technology Committee is revisiting our efforts to capture the observations and trends of academics in training the next generation of US coastal scientists and engineers (Elko et al., 2018).  The updated survey is intended to determine the current state and changes in academic programs, research funding, and workforce development over the last several years.  With a robust, national perspective of the state of academia in coastal science and engineering, we aim to develop goals and recommendations that can support current and future efforts in applied research, agency partnerships, and coastal careers.

The below survey was offered in 2024 and is open again in summer 2025 to capture data and trends from the past year. Results will be compared to 2024 responses and all questions remain the same except for time frame. If you are an undergraduate program please feel free to submit answers for your programs and students with a notation in question #24 indicating your program is undergraduate.

We ask that responses be submitted by August 11th 2025.

ASBPA/USCRP Academic Survey – 2025

ASBPA/USCRP Academic Survey – 2025

We invite academic professionals to complete the following survey to support our efforts in updating the state of training the next generation of coastal scientists and engineers. The survey should take approximately 5 minutes to complete. Thank you!

Programmatic

2. How many tenured coastal engineering/science professors are employed in your program?
3. How many non-tenured coastal engineering/science professors and research scientists/engineers are employed in your program?
4. How many post-docs are in your program?
5. What percent of post-docs in your program are domestic (i.e., U.S. Citizens)?

Graduate Student Training

6. How many graduate students are in your program?
7. What percent of graduate students in your program are domestic (i.e., U.S. Citizens)?
8. What are the primary sources for recruiting your graduate students in the last year? Please select all that apply.
9. Has the number of coastal science/engineering courses increased or decreased over the past year?
10. How often does your university offer courses that teach fundamentals (the underlying physics, traditional nearshore oceanography, coastal geology or engineering curricula of waves, sediment transport, geomorphology, hydraulics, structural design, structures’ effects on shorelines, ocean/nearshore labs, etc.)?

Research and Funding

11. Where do you receive Federal funding from (select all that apply):
12. What is your typical coastal science/engineering grant size?
13. Is funding difficult to obtain?
14. Has overall coastal science/engineering funding increased or decreased over the past year?
15. What percent of your research is basic research (rather than applied)?

Workforce Development

16. What percentage of graduate students and post-docs who are international (non-U.S. citizens) concluded their training in your program within the past year and then joined the U.S. workforce (non-academic)?
17. What percent of your students joined the US workforce and remained in academia?

Diversity

18. What percentage of the DOMESTIC graduate students and post-docs population in your research group identifies as belonging to minority groups? (e.g., African American/Black, Hispanic/Latino).
19. What percentage of the DOMESTIC graduate students and post-docs population in your research group identifies as female?
20. What percentage of the INTERNATIONAL graduate students and post-docs population in your research group identifies as belonging to minority groups? (e.g., African American/Black, Hispanic/Latino).
21. What percentage of the INTERNATIONAL graduate students and post-docs population in your research group identifies as female?
