Call for Manuscripts: Dedicated Issue of Shore & Beach

“Understanding Benefits from Cobble on Beaches”

The American Shore & Beach Preservation Association invites manuscripts on “Understanding Benefits from Cobble on Beaches” for a Dedicated Issue (DI) of Shore & Beach. This dedicated issue will be published in the fourth quarter of 2025.

Cobble beaches occur naturally in many parts of the world. Despite the prevalence of cobble and GCB (gravel, cobble, boulder) beaches on higher energy shorelines, far less is known about their transport and stability than sand beaches. Cobble is now being proposed as components of many natural and nature-based shoreline enhancement projects. As shorelines are subject to more intense and more frequent storms and rising sea level. Cobble is likely to become a higher percentage of mixed beach material and to be used more often in shoreline restoration and enhancement projects. There is much to be learned from both natural cobble shorelines and shoreline stability projects. This proposed issue is seeking papers that provide coastal process lessons learned from natural or constructed cobble or mixed beaches, cobble berms, cobble groins or other stabilization features.

Paper submissions across a broad range of storm-related topics are encouraged and a few specific examples include:

  • Case studies, post project assessments, post-storm project repairs, and/or lessons learned from cobble or cobble and mixed sediment beaches
  • Performance of coastal cobble systems including natural and built coastal environments
  • Ability of natural and nature-based shoreline with cobble to provide storm risk or damage reduction
  • Observations or analysis of storm-driven cobble-material processes, including measurements, modeling methods, and modeling results
  • Advances in forecasting and simulation of long-shore and cross-shore transport of cobble-only or mixed cobble shorelines
  • Long-term trends in responses to storms by cobble or mixed cobble beaches compared with sandy beaches
  • Criteria for proportions of cobble in mixed cobble beaches that extend sediment retention beyond that expected from cobble-free beaches.

SCHEDULE: The pertinent dates for expressions of interest and draft submission are below. We expect the issue (Volume 93, Issue 4) to be published in the fourth quarter of 2025.

  • Expression of Interest: May 9, 2025
  • Draft Papers Submitted:  July 14, 2025

SUBMISSIONS:  Author instructions for manuscript submission to Shore & Beach are available at https://asbpa.org/publications/shore-and-beach/. Manuscripts should be no more than 10,000 word equivalents. Figures will be published electronically in color, and grayscale in the print version, unless authors are able to pay page charges.

Please indicate your interest in submitting a manuscript and/or service as a reviewer or Guest Editor via email to editor@asbpa.org and mg_editor@asbpa.org. Additionally, questions may be addressed to Dr. Lesley Ewing via email (Lesleycoastal@gmail.com).

Turnaround time for publication in Shore & Beach is rapid compared with most journals. We are seeking early expressions of interest from authors so we can plan the issue accordingly. Thank you for your consideration. We look forward to hearing from you.

JOURNAL DETAILS: Shore & Beach publishes quality refereed papers of interest to a diverse audience of scientists, engineers, coastal managers and government officials. Papers cover a full spectrum of coastal topics from beach erosion and restoration to coastal zone management, sea level rise issues, economics of the coast, and environmental impacts. Articles should appeal and be accessible to an interdisciplinary audience.
