ASBPA Takes Action on Strategic Goals for Student Support

August 5, 2025Beach News ServiceAnnie Mercer

ASBPA launched its 2025-2027 Strategic Plan in June, focused on expanding our mission and vision statements to include the broader values of the organization and more specific goals including:

  • Promoting the integration of best-available scientific knowledge into U.S. coastal policies;
  • advocating for funding for federal shore & beach restoration programs and studies;
  • advancing and translating innovative, impactful research addressing key scientific challenges;
  • supporting students and new professionals;
  • and inspiring and mobilizing coastal practitioners from various geographies and areas of coastal expertise.

ASBPA views students and new professionals as the solvers of tomorrow’s complex coastal problems. Coastal management challenges are changing in complex ways due to the effects of climate change and our communities, states, and nation need skilled workers from different backgrounds to create and improve solutions.

The Young Coastal Scientists and Engineers Conference – Americas has been bringing together the next generation of the coastal workforce to network, present their research, and learn about new technologies. This year the University of North Carolina at Wilmington hosted over 70 participants and keynote speakers.

Students and New Professionals Chapter (SNP) Vice President, Delaney Doran, was there to kick off the conference with a short presentation about the SNP, what events they offer, and how to join. ASBPA staff was also there to answer questions and share all of the initiatives we work on that benefit students.

Networking

Students and new professionals had time to meet and mingle both formally and informally. The program had plenty of breaks for participants to swarm the hallway and connect over coffees between presentations. At the end of the first day, ASBPA Staff and Delaney Doran, hosted a speed networking event where participants quickly introduced themselves by answering questions about their research, interests, academic experiences, and recommendations to their tables then shifting to a new table with a new set of questions. The short event before dinner was overflowing with participation.

Presenting Research

The schedule was a full two and a half days of presentations and posters by student and new professional attendees. Set up in a lecture hall, this conference projected the potential future in academia and included attendees from all 4 US coastlines, the Pacific Islands, Mexico, and Germany. Topics included sand resource management, ocean current dynamics, coastal flooding and adaptation, water quality, and much much more.

New Tools & Technologies

Highlights from this year included several new technologies. Melissa Marry presented on a DIY Sedimeter day one. Day two Jacob Stasiewicz demoed the Sand Hound. SandHound is a quadruped robot used to capture high-resolution sediment images. With an integrated, GPS, camera, and onboard machine learning capabilities, the SandHound will be used for high-resolution grain size surveying. Andrew Davey also shared research on a Stereo camera system for Overturning wave KinEmatiCs and dynAMics (STOKECAM). The poster session also featured no less than five low cost water quality sensors to help monitoring efforts .

This year’s conference included presentations and posters by many SNP university chapter and national chapter members.
