Episode 15. ASBPA’s Shaping Shores with Scott Douglass

Welcome to Shaping Shores, the Centennial podcast of the American Shore and Beach Preservation Association. For nearly a hundred years, ASBPA has united people across science, policy, and practice to preserve U.S. shores and beaches.

In Episode 15, Scott Douglass, Professor Emeritus at the University of South Alabama and Vice President at GMC, joins the ASBPA #ShapingShoresPodcast to share how a New Jersey lifeguard found his way into coastal engineering, helped build Alabama’s modern beach management program, and inspired a generation of students working across the country today. He reflects on lessons from early inlet studies, the origins of his influential book Saving America’s Beaches, and why the prescription for healthy coasts still comes down to three words: back off, bypass, and nourish.

Guests

Scott Douglass wrote the acclaimed book for laypersons about beaches ‘Saving America’s Beaches:The Causes of and Solutions to Beach Erosion’ and visited over 500 American beaches while writing it. Have designed beaches and marshes along ocean and bay shores. Have developed all the FHWA guidance on how the build resilient highways along the coast.

Nicole Elko is Executive Director of the American Shore and Beach Preservation Association and host of the Shaping Shores podcast.
