Episode 20. ASBPA’s Shaping Shores with Joan Pope

Welcome to Shaping Shores, the Centennial podcast of the American Shore and Beach Preservation Association. For nearly a hundred years, ASBPA has united people across science, policy, and practice to preserve U.S. shores and beaches.

In Episode 20, Joan Pope, retired Assistant Director of Research and Development at USACE headquarters and ASBPA member since 1974, joins the ASBPA #ShapingShoresPodcast to discuss how coastal science and technology has evolved and how her work has contributed to ASBPA’s mission.

Guests

Ms. Pope retired in August 2012 as the Assistant Director for Civil Works Research and Development at the Headquarters of the US Army Engineers after a nearly 40 year career including assignments at the Buffalo District, Waterways Experiment Stations (later ERDC), and USACE Headquarters. She coordinated Research and Development for the Corps water resource and applied engineering mission. She conducted research and lead numerous programs in developing the Coastal Engineering Manual, Regional Sediment Management, Lidar Bathymetry, Evaluating coastal project performance, developing non-traditional shore protection systems, etc.

Nicole Elko is Executive Director of the American Shore and Beach Preservation Association and host of the Shaping Shores podcast.
