ASBPA and CSBPA were critical in my professional development and a huge part of my career. I remember the early days sitting down with Professors Dean O’Brian, Joe Johnson, Bob Weigel and Orville Magoon talking about coastal processes and asking why we didn’t have a California Chapter. We pulled in Greg Woodall to be part of the organizing team and become the first President of the new California Chapter. Once Greg became ASBPA president, I became the second President of the California team. What was critical in those early days was the total support we got from the Corps of Engineers administration allowing us to write ASBPA papers, go to conferences and to be part of the executive committees and Board of Directors.I remember that first paper [Selected Coastal Storm Damage in California, Winter of 1977-78] well. Professors Joe Johnson and Bob Weigel were my mentors guiding me along. Data from that year will be interesting to compare with this upcoming year. The forecasts for the El Niño are going through the roof.
I have always been and continue to be proud of the work that ASBPA has done and continues on raising the awareness of our coastal challenges.
