CSBPA Objectives
- Foster dialogue and cooperation amongst diverse groups and audiences on shore and beach
issues, including but not limited to: shore and beach processes; coastal geomorphology and historic
changes; coastal wetlands; ports, harbors and marinas; beach nourishment and preservation;
sediment management; shoreline protection; nature-based adaptation; coastal recreation;
monitoring and mitigation efforts; coastal policy, and land use planning, especially efforts focused
on the California or Pacific coastline. - Support dialogue and cooperation on new coastal science, research, and emerging issues.
- Initiate tasks and special projects that serve to advance coastal sciences, design practices and
better understanding of coastal materials. - Support the professional development of CSBPA members, young professionals, and interested
communities through annual meetings, newsletters, guidance memos, training workshops,
participation in ASBPA meetings, contributions to Shore and Beach: Journal of the American Shore &
Beach Preservation Association and preparation of information dissemination tools. - Encourage and be respectful of a broad diversity of input on coastal issues and perspectives
through meetings, conferences, workshops, committee assignments and board membership. - Recognize outstanding coastal professionals through the Joe Johnson Outstanding Service Award that
recognizes individuals and groups who contribute to coastal preservation in California and the Peter
Douglas Coastal Stewardship Award for coastal stewardship and public access. - Support academic interest in shore and beach topics through the “Outstanding Project in Coastal
Science or Engineering” award, for a high school project entered into the California State Science Fair,
and the “Robert L. Wiegel Scholarship for Coastal Studies” to provide support for graduate student
research. Encourage a new generation of coastal professionals. - Maintain linkages with ASBPA, other state or regional chapters, and other non-profit organizations
with similar objectives. - Engage in appropriate advocacy for laws, regulations, programs and projects which are consistent
with and further the purpose and mission of the CSBPA. CSBPA advocacy positions and activities
shall conform to the following principles:- Support actions that restore, preserve, and enhance the state’s shoreline and that benefit
the people of the state and nation. The benefits of shoreline actions, in terms of
environmental quality, habitat enhancement, public access, recreation, property protection
and economic. - Support actions that promote an attitude of stewardship and responsibility toward the
state’s shoreline for the public and by governments at all levels. - Support actions that recognize the shoreline as a frontline for climate change and respect it
as an integral part of the state’s natural and manmade infrastructure benefiting the public,
which requires periodic rebuilding, maintenance and adjustment just as do the state’s
roads, parks, lakes and rivers.
