This year (2023) marks the 100th anniversary of the nation’s first beach nourishment project, which was constructed on Coney Island, New York. The project planners and engineers showed astonishing foresight by incorporating the following elements into the original nourishment project: equity and inclusion; balancing private property rights with public access; the beneficial use of dredged material, hybrid engineering with groins and coincident beach nourishment; a scientific tracer study; and the monetization of return on investment. This article is an overview of the historical account of the actions and legislation that enabled this landmark event to take place.
