Common Mistakes in Design of Coastal and Marine Projects
This course discusses three major pitfalls in the design of coastal engineering projects and introduces approaches to safeguard against the associated risks. The design risks are related to the following concepts: (1) Design wave height; (2) Sediment transport; and (3) Design methodology.  Participants will need to complete quizzes, two of which require application of simple, publicly available software to perform preliminary calculations and make design judgments to confirm an understanding of the design risks.

1:00 pm until 5:00 pm

Engineering With Nature®
Engineering With Nature® (EWN), in partnership with Coastal Zone Foundation, is leading a four-hour course on designing natural-based infrastructure for increased coastal resilience. The course will include 6-7 technical presentations that cover a broad range of topics which cover quantifying environmental benefits associated with natural infrastructure (NI), strategies for designing NI, identifying existing NI and NI opportunities, and the state-of-the-art in NI practices; innovative engineering and operational procedures, modeling, benefits quantification, and strategic communications.

Click here for a full description of the EWN short course.

PRESENTATION GUIDELINES

Below are the guidelines for preparing your presentation for the 2022 National Coastal Conference, “Shifting Shores, Surf, and Sediment.” This year’s conference will take place both in-person and virtually through Whova, therefore please take notice of additional requirements on the presentations and posters.

Oral presentations will be a total of 20 minutes. We urge you to present for 15 minutes and allow five minutes for questions. We consistently receive feedback that a robust Q&A discussion following presentations is meaningful to both the presenter and attendee. Time limits will be strictly enforced so that the numerous concurrent sessions stay on schedule.

The Q&A feature in Whova sends the moderator all questions submitted from in-person or remote participants. They will read questions out loud and repeat any in-person questions. Whoa also allows you to answer questions as they are submitted by participants while the recording is running, before, or after your presentation. Please don’t hesitate to contact us should you have any questions about the procedures.

Speakers are encouraged to edit your presentation title, bio, and abstract through the Whova Speaker Center. If you have changes related to your status of in-person or virtual, please let us know as soon as possible.

Pre-Recorded Presentations

Virtual presenters are required to submit their presentation ahead of the conference. Pre-recorded presentations should follow the 15/5 presentation to question ratio. Recordings should be saved as MP4 files. Upload the presentation to a personal Google Drive, wetransfer, organizational file share service, or DropBox and be shared with asbpatech@gmail.com. The deadline to submit pre-recorded presentations is August 30, 2022.

Live Presentations

As a live presenter you will be expected to share your presentation with staff by 5pm PT the day before your presentation at the latest. Your presentation will be loaded on the laptop in your session room and you are responsible for running your presentation with a slide advance remote or laptop keys. Laptops will be performing several functions at once to provide our hybrid conference and will not show presenter view. Presenters need to bring their own notes for their presentations.

Submissions

Presentation slides should be sent to asbpatech@gmail.com ahead of the conference or dropped off at the Tech Desk at the conference until 5pm PT the day before your presentation. Presentations should be in Powerpoint format. If you will be using a different program, please contact managing@asbpa.org and annie.mercer@asbpa.org by Thursday September 1st.

Speaker Instructions

Please follow the link to view the Speaker Instructions PDF with notes for in person and virtual speakers. Check out our short little fact sheet on Zoom Tips and Tricks to help get you started on presenting in this new format.

Speaker Instructions

Posters

All poster presenters are required to upload the following to the virtual poster session prior to conference start:

o   PDF copy of your poster

o   2-5 minute video explaining your poster in mp4 format

o   200×200 pixel headshot

In-person poster presenters must print their poster prior to the in-person poster session on Wednesday evening. Poster size should be less than 4 ft by 3 ft and be oriented horizontally (i.e., 3 ft height and 4 ft length). Poster board assignments will be communicated to participants.

We would like to inform presenters about a local option for printing posters available for the Long Beach Conference. This company can print your poster and deliver it to the poster area for your pick up at registration Wednesday September 14th. Please read the following flier for cost and service information: SoCal Poster Board LLC Flier. Interested participants should contact SoCal Poster Board directly at posters@socalposterboard.com.

2-5 minute videos can be powerpoint presentations, walkthroughs of your PDF, follow the lightning talk template provided below, or be recorded oral presentations. The recording will be uploaded by the poster presenter via Whova’s Artifact Center. This pre-recorded video cannot and will not be used for the lightning talk session, as all lightning talk presenters must present live (remote or in-person) for the purpose of a robust Q&A discussion to follow.

New this year: Poster presenters have the OPTION to present a 2-minute lightning talk summarizing the highlights of their research. The lightning talks will take place in a virtual session at the conference. All in-person presenters in the lightning talk session will present live via zoom in the Tokyo room. Virtual presenters will present via the zoom link provided in the Whova agenda. Attendees can tune in via the whova desktop or mobile app. A presenter lineup will be provided ahead of the conference. Lightning talks must use the provided template (Lightning Talk Slides). Lightning presentations are due to asbpatech@gmail.com by Friday September 9th. If you would like to present a lightning talk, please indicate so in the abstract submission form. Again, lightning talk slides can also be used for the requested 2-5 minute presentation.

Moderators and Volunteers

Moderators and volunteers help keep the conference on time, introduce speakers, and serve as informational resources.

Moderators can view the Moderator Details and Duties PDF for review. If you have any questions please feel free to contact Annie annie.mercer@asbpa.org before you arrive or find her at the conference.
